Master Series Championship News
-
Nov. 21, 2004
So
the year ends where it began - with Roger Federer
the undisputed King of the Hill. As expected, he absolutely
marmelised Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-2 to win his second
successive Masters Cup title. That is not to denigrate
Hewitt's fire, passion and abundant talent, it is
just that whenever Federer steps on court, we have
come to expect perfection. He usually delivers it,
too.

DAY 6 - November 20, 2004
If
betting were not frowned upon by the governors
of tennis, it would have been wise to have
put a little money on Roger Federer as the
Masters Cup began. The odds would have made
the wager worthless - who in their right
mind is going to bet against the Swiss?
- but it would have been the safest dollar
you would ever have waged.

DAY 5 - November 19, 2004
This
is almost like women's tennis. As the Masters
Cup moves into the final weekend, the top
four are all still here. The seedings, such
as they are have worked out better than
at a WTA event. The only difference is the
level of interest and the level of competition.

DAY 4 - November 18, 2004
From
the mathematical wilderness that is the
round robin phase of the Masters Cup, two
men have emerged as semi-finalists. While
the others work out who will provide the
supporting cast, Roger Federer and Andy
Roddick are through to the last four without
dropping a set. Gosh - what a surprise.

DAY 3 - November 17, 2004
That'll
teach 'em. Who's bright idea was it to hold
an outdoor tournament in Houston in November?
It's winter and it is wet in the winter.
And, sure enough, it is wet at the Masters
Cup.

DAY 2 - November 16, 2004
It
is the Masters Cup, the last great hurrah
for the ATP before the season draws to a
close. These are the sort of events and
occasions that Lleyton Hewitt lives for
- give that man a big stage and the fiercest
of opponents and you will always bring out
the best in him.

DAY 1 - November 15, 2004
Peace
appears to have broken out at the Masters
Cup. As the ATP's annual showcase event
began yesterday, everyone was on best behavior.
The players were happy and polite, the facilities
were - accordingly to absolutely everyone
who was asked for an opinion and some who
were not - simply splendid and, so everyone
thought, it was marvellous to be back in
Houston.
